SWALCO’s (Solid Waste Agency of Lake County) Recycle & Redirect Guide provides numerous tips on properly disposing of an assortment of unwanted items.  Take a look at the list, there are many items that you might not think of recycling.

1st Saturday of the month 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (except holidays)
Fluorescent light bulbs, foam containers, foam packaging materials, clothing and textiles are also accepted at this location.

Wauconda Township

Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
1st Saturday of the month 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Fluorescent light bulbs are also accepted at this location.

City of Waukegan
Public Works Facility

Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (except holidays)
Clothing and textiles are also accepted at this location.


OTHER RECYCLING LOCATIONS:

  • Major Appliances in Good Working Condition:  Habitat for Humanity in Gurnee, 800-249-3160.

  • Major Appliances:  Environmental Field Services, 800-480-4337.  This service will collect appliances for a fee that is much lower than the fee Waste Management charges. 

  • Old Sneakers:  The Vernon Hills Public works building (490 Greenleaf) or the Vernon Hills Park District (635 Aspen Rd.)

  • Household Chemical Waste:  Year-round collections of residential waste are taken by appointment at SWALCO’s permanent facility located at 1311 N. Estes St., Gurnee.  Mobile events are held periodically from April through November.  Additional information is posted on SWALCO’s website www.lakecountyil.gov/swalco

  • Medication Disposal:  The Highland Park Police Department accepts outdated or unneeded medication in the lobby of its headquarters (1677 Old Deerfield Road).

  • Old Carpeting:  1529 S. Cicero, Cicero, IL  (708-863-6660) They are open for drop-offs Monday-Saturday 10:00 am-4:00pm.  There is a $30 charge.
  • Expired Coupons:  Military families can use expired coupons for up to six months past their expiration date. See the following website for details:  thekrazycouponlady.com/coupons-for-military.  Please note that the coupons you send must be no older than 30 days past their expiration.
